Barbary Coast is the OG. Long before Moe Greens brought the big, social, restaurant-scale lounge to the city, this SoMa dispensary on Mission Street was quietly running one of California’s first Amsterdam-style on-premises consumption rooms — a distinction it has held since adult-use lounge service began here in January 2018, with dispensary roots reaching back years earlier.
The room reads like a cannabis steakhouse: deep red-leather booths with high dividers, hardwood floors, dim lighting, and a dab bar fitted with quartz glass for concentrates alongside a combustibles area for flower and pre-rolls. Pool tables, TVs for the game, and a run of live programming — comedy, movie nights, trivia, Football Sundays — give it the feel of a neighborhood tavern that happens to run on cannabis instead of alcohol. Bong rentals go for a few dollars, glass bowls for a dollar, and the coffee, tea, and soda are on the house.
Worth being clear about what this place is and isn’t: Barbary Coast is a consumption lounge, not a THC-beverage bar. There’s no infused drink menu and no kitchen — the drinks here are the complimentary, non-infused kind. What you come for is the room, the dab bar, and the sense of sitting inside the history of legal on-premises cannabis in San Francisco. If Moe Greens is big and bright and new, Barbary Coast is intimate, dark, and lived-in — the counterpoint that makes the pairing worth doing.
