Gray Area opened in 2025 as a private, members-only cannabis club and cafe in the Woodlawn neighborhood of NE Portland — a couple of blocks from Woodlawn Park and next door to the Potland dispensary. Membership is required for entry; the club’s read of Oregon’s Indoor Clean Air Act rests on the same workaround the older Portland clubs have used for nearly a decade.
What Gray Area does differently is lean into the cafe half of its identity. The daily menu leads with sandwiches on artisan bread, locally-sourced fillings, fresh pastries, and coffee brewed from locally-roasted beans. None of that food or drink is cannabis-infused — Oregon licensing wouldn’t allow it. Members bring their own cannabis from licensed dispensaries and consume it on the premises, alongside the food and drink they buy on-site. Reviewers describe a dab bar, rotating art on the walls, games, and a series of Meet the Maker events that bring in specific growers, extractors, and glass artists.
Hours are compact and clustered around evenings and weekends: closed Monday through Wednesday, then open Thursday through Sunday. It is a young venue — well under a year of Google reviews at press time — but the design decisions and hours pattern read like a room that intends to be here for a while.
