The Zen Arcade

The Zen Arcade opened in November 2023 inside the Hook & Ladder Theater at 3010 Minnehaha Avenue, the first Minneapolis venue explicitly billed as a “rock & roll cannabis lounge.” The name is a nod to Hüsker Dü’s 1984 double album — one of the greatest records ever made in Minneapolis — and the aesthetic runs deep with it: local band posters, vinyl bins along one wall, a turntable customers are encouraged to commandeer, and a rotating slate of pop-up performances and dance parties.

Everything on offer here is hemp-derived and alcohol-free. The lounge stocks a rotating selection of local THC seltzers and cans by the drink, plus THC snacks, cookies, and the house gummy brand Yummi Life for takeaway. The kitchen offering is Heggie’s pizza — the cult Milaca, Minnesota, frozen pizza that Minnesotans passionately claim as their own — heated up on site. A two-player retro video game console loaded with 5,000 vintage games, foosball, big screen TVs, and comfy places to hang round out the room.

Co-owners built the space deliberately as an alternative to bar culture: “A lot of people that don’t drink alcohol, they don’t really have a place to hang out like that,” one told MinnPost at opening. “The idea is to create a space that is a little bit insulated from that kind of alcohol-based behavior and entertainment.” When the Hook & Ladder next door is dark, Zen Arcade also sells fee-free tickets to Hook shows and doubles as a pre-show snack bar when the theater is running. Open Thursday through Saturday evenings, 21+, patio in warmer months, private event rentals available.
