Alaska was the <strong>first state in the country</strong> to license cannabis consumption lounges. The Alaska Marijuana Control Board finalized statewide onsite consumption rules in 2018 and issued the country's first endorsements in 2020. Lounges run under state cannabis law — regulated by the Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office (AMCO) — so they're unaffected by the federal hemp changes taking effect in late 2026.

Only a licensed retail marijuana store can hold an onsite consumption endorsement. AMCO reviews the endorsement application separately from the retail license and every applicant must also secure local jurisdictional approval from the city or borough before opening.
Per 3 AAC 306.370, one patron may consume at most 1 gram of flower, 25 mg of THC in edibles, or a vape cartridge with up to 0.3 g of concentrate in a single day at a licensed lounge. Cannabis beverages and dabs are not permitted for onsite consumption.
Indoor smoking or vaping onsite is only allowed inside a freestanding building with a state-approved ventilation and filtration system and a separate smoke-free monitoring area for staff. Non-freestanding stores may still be endorsed for edibles-only consumption (which is Anchorage's citywide model).
Alcohol is prohibited on the premises. Retailers with an endorsement may sell non-cannabis food and non-alcoholic drinks — the Fairbanks and Kenai Peninsula lounges lean on this to run as full coffee cafes — but no alcohol may be sold or brought in.
Entry and sales are restricted to guests 21 and older. A valid, government-issued photo ID is required at the door, and lounge staff are trained under the endorsement rules to refuse service to anyone showing signs of impairment.
